Accessories For Guitar beginners guitarists

Accessories For Guitar beginners guitarists needs

Once you make the decision to buy your first guitar, there are a few extra things you’ll want to buy. These accessories will make your life a bit easier, help you out, or even save you money in the long run.
Here are my recommendations on what you need to get, and why. As you know, I’ve been teaching guitar for many years now, and these items are what I deem to be important for a beginner guitarist. Of course, you can go wild, and spend an extra $1000 on things you don’t really need, but why would you.
All you need is the following. And your guitar of course.

Electric tuner -- $9
Snark SN1 -- Cheap and dependable
If you get a beginner guitar pack, you may already have an electric guitar tuner, but if not, I really recommend you get one. They are cheap, and they’llsave you lots of time and pain.
I recommend getting a clip-on tuner, which you clip-on the headstock of your acoustic or electric guitar. The tuner will pick up the vibration of your guitar, and indicate what not it “feels”. This is much better than traditional electric tuners which worked by sound, since these vibration tuners can be used in loud environments.

Capo -- $15
Kyser -- Strong quick change capo
A capo is a device that will allow you to basically move the nut of your guitar upwards. Lots of songs use capos, so make sure to put it into your shopping cart.
They may try to sell you a separate one for the electric and acoustic, but don’t fall for it. You only need one, a good one.
Also, I recommend the quick change capo. Don’t get those screw on ones, they are a pain to work with and move on-off.

Guitar stand -- $13
A stable stand with security strap
I always thought that getting a guitar stand is a trivial thing, but it’s not.
Do not just put your guitar in your gig bag or into your closet when you’re not using it. You need to place your guitar on a guitar stand out in plain sightwhere you can see it. Trust me, you’ll pick it up more often, which will help you get more practice. And of course guitars look cool
You can also opt to have a wall mounted guitar holder, the purpose is the same.

String cleaner or string wipes -- $8
Lengthen the life of your strings, wipe’em down
When you practice, the dirt and sweat from your hands all end up on your guitar strings. This really reduces the life of a set of strings, and the neck of your guitar will be dirty as well.
Get yourself string wipes to extend the life of your strings, and keep your guitar beautiful.
You can get a cleaning system, or just presoaked wipes. If you don’t get either, I strongly recommend wiping your each string after each practice sessions with a piece of cloth, that works as well.

String winder/cutter -- $7
This handy tool will save you time
Yes, believe it or not, you’re going to have to learn to change guitar strings, you can’t keep on taking it to the guitar shop forever. It’s easier than it seems, especially with the right tools.
Basically the only thing you really need to change strings is a string cutter, but as marvelous as technology is, you can get it built into a string winderas well.
The string winder will save you a lot of time winding your strings, it’s a very practical tool.
Extra picks -- $4
A pick variety pack to test drive different styles
Seriously, the number of picks you’ll end up losing around home is ridiculous, I don’t know how they can just disappear all the time.
And of course you also always want to keep a pick in your wallet as well, you never know when you’ll need it.
Get a combo pick pack, which has several varieties of picks. Experiment with them, you’ll develop your taste for picks with time. Of course, if you’re more into strumming, you’ll want thinner picks, and if you’re into lead, you’ll need thicker picks.
Gig bag -- $50
Gig bag with 2 cm padding for protection
Your guitar most likely came with some sort of storage option, but if not, you’ll definitely want to get a gig bag, or a hard case. How else would you get your guitar from A to B?
If you do lots of traveling, a hard case is better, but a gig bag is good enough for most guitarists. I would recommend spending a bit extra and getting one that has 2 cm of foam padding, so it protects your guitar better.
It’s a bit more expensive, but you only need to buy it once, and it can mean the difference between crying over a broken guitar, or being thankful that you bought the thicker padding.
Metronome (optional) -- free online
Metronomes are really useful practice tools, since they help you develop your sense of rhythm and timing. The reason they are optional on my list, is that you can download metronome software onto your computer or a metronome app for your phone, or even use our online metronome.

Guitar lessons -- free to $15/month
And once you’re packed up with all these goodies, you’ll need to practice and practice and practice as much as possible, to become the guitarist you always wanted to be.

So there there you have it, these are pretty much all of the accessories and tools a beginner guitarist will need. My recommendations are inexpensive, but they are tried and tested products you’ll be using for years to come.

Learning Guitar Takes How Many Days?

How Long Does it Take to Learn Guitar?

The question lots of people ask me when they start thinking about learning to play guitar is, “How long will it take me?”
Well, it depends on several things, not just how talented you are. Sure, having a talent for music and a good ear will help you achieve results, but in the long run, the guitarist that practices the correct way will win over the lazier, yet more “talented” musician. Why?
Playing the guitar will mean learning totally new hand and finger movements, almost like learning to walk. You will need to strengthen hand muscles that you didn’t even know existed, and on top of that, you’ll have to learn very precise, coordinated finger movements as well. The only way to learn these movement, improve your hand muscle memory, and really progress at playing the guitar, is to practice regularly.

But lets get back to the original question of how long it will take to learn the guitar. Given that you practice regularly, you can reach these stages within the given amount of time:
·         1-2 months: Play easy guitar songs (strumming a couple of chords, single string plucking songs with not much string jumping, chord arpeggios)

·         3-6 months: Play a bit more difficult songs, which  require more technical elements. For example, songs requiring easier hammer-ons, pull-offs and other easier lead guitar  techniques.

·         1 year: Play intermediate level songs, including many very popular guitar songs, riffs, blues, and so on. You will probably start getting a more definitive feel for barre chords at around this time as well.

·         2 years: If you practice enough, you could be playing most songs in 2 years. Of course, you’ll need to practice them before you can actually play them, but learning a song at this stage is very quick, as you’ll have mastered most technical elements already.

·         2-3 years: If you learned guitar theory during your guitar journey, you’ll be able to improvise on the guitar as well.

·         5-6 years: You can call yourself an advanced guitarist, you’ll be able to play anything you want.

·         10 years: You’ll realize how much you don’t know yet, and want to learn even more. Your guitar collection will reach a yearly average of 7-12 guitars.

·         20+ years: You’ll be playing and entertaining others all the time. Out of your 20 guitars, you only play 3, your favorite ones.

The moral of the story is that learning to play the guitar is a never ending process, but getting to an acceptable level, where you will actually start enjoying your music (and won’t drive others crazy   ), can be reached after about 6 months of regular practice.
I would like to emphasize the word REGULAR. Many beginners pick up their guitar for a couple days, than stop for a week, pick it up again, than give it a rest, and so on. This is usually caused by the fact that learning the guitar won’t happen overnight, it takes weeks of practice before you even start getting a hang of how to change chords. It’s all part of the learning curve, but unfortunately, many beginners loose their enthusiasm after a very short time. This has always been like this, and probably always will be.
If you ever get discouraged, or stuck at any given point, just remember that even the best guitar players were beginners at one time, everyone went through the learning curve. If you endure, you’ll be left with a wonderful hobby that will be yours to keep for life, bringing you, your family and friends countless hours of joy.
A pretty good trade off in my opinion!

STRUMMING EXERCISE FOR Guitar BEGGINERS

STRUMMING EXERCISE For Guitar BEGGINERS
RHYTHM
“You have either got it, or you haven’t!”
“It can’t be taught!”
Both these sentiments seem to creep up on the beginning guitarist as they learn to form their first few chords and their teacher, or the book they are learning from, or this (or any) Internet site, (you know where I am coming from) tells them to form a chord and then “strum it like this, Down, Down, Down Up Down…”
Most beginners have a go at this, but either:
Dig into the strings on the first down and it all goes wrong from there…
Can’t do an upstroke without bashing the whole guitar up in the air…..
Stumble blindly along, thrashing at the guitar with a stiff arm and wrist…
Can do something approaching the right action, but with no rhythm at all…
Or do something not listed above that has the same ending:
Frustration!
WHY IS THAT?
The main reason this is the case is nothing to do with your lack of rhythm or timing, and nothing to do with the guitar, the weather, the cold cup of coffee that is slowly forming a surface scum during the hours you practice and practice. It has to do with your…brain.
When you first start learning the guitar, what do you focus on? Where to put your fingers, how the strings are tuned, how to hold the pick, how to sit, how to do this, that and the other. It’s all mechanical, not feel. It’s all involving your brain, and no other senses at all. It’s like building up Lego bricks…I put this here, and that there, and I make a house called music!
So you get into this state where your brain is telling you there is a mechanical solution to the strumming thing. Only the thing is – there isn’t. At least, not to do it well. I’ll give you a great example. Got a biscuit tin? Or a table top? Right, put your guitar in its stand. Leave it alone. Really! OK, on the biscuit tin, bash out a steady rhythm with your preferred hand. It need not be complicated, just bash – bash – bash – bash
Easy. Nothing to it. Nothing to THINK ABOUT that’s why. You just go ahead and do it! OK, now after every third “bash” use your other hand to throw in a quick tap.
Bash – bash – bash tap bash.
Can you repeat that, over and over again? Nothing to it is there. Now, have you got a metronome handy? If not, go get one. Set it at 80 bpm, or a bit quicker, its up to you. Now do your biscuit tin bashing to that. Ignore the neighbours at the door, they’ll soon quit hammering. If they are hammering with rhythm, then who needs a metronome?
Can you do your bashing in time with the metronome, time after time? Can you clap in time with the metronome?
Can you stamp your feet in time with the metronome?
Almost certainly the answer to all of the above is YES.
So let’s get one thing straight right here and now – YOU HAVE RHYTHM. All you have to do now, is transfer these skills to the guitar.
A FEW THINGS WORTH POINTING OUT
A soft pick with be easier to strum with than a hard pick (generally). For absolute beginners, the really light white Dunlop picks are a good choice, they are really bendy and encourage a brushing, rather than digging action.
1.       Try and keep the pick at right angles to the strings. This is because you want the strings to vibrate in an up-and-down motion, not side to side. A major cause of fret buzz when strumming is getting the strings vibrating in the wrong plane, so keep that pick nice and level.
2.       Don’t hold the pick too hard. Hold it just firm enough to stop it slipping.
3.       Strum near to, or over, the sound hole for most of the time.
4.       RELAX – I have seen people look like they are chopping wood when strumming, with a rigid arm going up and down, and no wrist movement at all. Chill out! You want to feel like there is no tension in your arm at all, just a nice loose feeling.
ESSENTIAL ITEMS
1.       A metronome
2.       A metronome
3.       A metronome

17 Mistakes Any Guitarist Should Avoid

17 Mistakes Any Guitarist Should Avoid

The guitar is a fascinating instrument that will enrich your life in more ways than one. It will be your companion either when you're feeling alone or when you the life of the party; beside you in your highs and lows - a confidant you can turn to day and night. It'll help tide over your boredom and sooth you when you are fatigued and go with you where ever you wish to take it.

It all sounds quite romantic but if you are a beginner, you're probably thinking I've gone nuts! What I wrote sounds inspiring, but be warned, the first few months your guitar will test you severely. You will lose your cool, get frustrated, angry and feel extremely inept. Don't expect your guitar to easily play into your hands - it takes time, patience, practice and perseverance. While learning, you are bound to make mistakes and fail. But failure is the pillar of success, and believe me, you will tide over and tame your beast.

Enough with the lecture, let us get down to certain mistakes that you must avoid. These not only cost you time and energy, but more importantly hurt your morale.

(I.) Broad Mistakes:

1. Don't give up before you start: If you want to learn the guitar, go out and buy yourself one. Procrastination will leave you at air guitar at best and playing in your dreams doesn't count as solid practice. Here's the guide / advice on buying (and maintaining) a new guitar.

2. Don't give up too soon: If you skipped the introductory paragraph then go back and read it and hopefully you'll be inspired. How soon is too soon? If you are quitting - its too soon! If your finger tips pain, use cold water or ice and rest them. It will get better. And once the calluses form in a few weeks, it won't pain any more.
